Helen Mirren as great as always.During the first year, Fellows rotate through clinical and administrative departments of the practice, ambulatory practices, Duke University Health System and Duke University Hospitals. The painting has been on display in New York ever since.Ī captivating story with an elating end justice is done and the lady that had been deprived of her family and life in her home land is reunited with her beloved aunt's portrait. But thankfully the heroine wins, against all odds, and she takes her aunt back to the USA with her, determined not to leave her in Austria. It is an impossible fight, one lady against the Austrian government over what the Austrians refer to in the movie as “the Austrian Mona Lisa”. The heroine was very attached to her aunt so the paining was a strong link to both her beloved aunt and to her family’s happy past, cruelly obliterated by the Germans. The painting had been commissioned by the heroine's uncle and the object is the heroine’s beautiful aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer. She is resentful of being deprived of her youth and cannot face going back to her home land, Austria. The heroine (Helen Mirren) had to leave everything behind, including her parents and her entire life, to escape the Nazis, and she resettled in the USA. The movie is about an elderly lady's fight against the Austrian Government to win back one of her family's possession, the Gustav Klimt painting, which was “confiscated” by the Nazis, along with many other pieces of art and valuables in the WW2. I can thoroughly recommend this film as it shows the wickedness of the Nazis and their persecution of Jewish families and they stole so much art belonging to Jewish families.Īs a Gustav Klimt's fan, I was intrigued to discover the fascinating story behind one of Klimt’s most famous and stunning paintings, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (known as Woman in Gold). So now the painting is in a private collection so will most likely never be seen in public again which is a great shame. The painting was sold to the Lauder family and was put on display in the Neue gallery in New York but later sold to a Chinese businessman. There were some moving flashbacks to WW2 when her families possessions were stolen by the Nazis and she managed to flee the country.Following a court case the Austrian government eventually agreed to return the painting to her and it's such a shame they didn't do a deal so they could keep the painting in Austria. Helen Mirren was marvellous in the role of the woman trying to get the painting of her aunt Adele Bloch Bauer (the Woman in Gold) back from the Austrian government. I have just visited the Belvedere gallery in Vienna so this film was of interest to me as a fan of Gustav Klimt.
